MacCailein Mor and Chief of Clan Campbell 1937-2001
FOREWORD BY HIS GRACE, THE DUKE OF ARGYLL
I AM DELIGHTED to have been asked to write this Foreword to "The Clan
Campbell Collection of Highland Pipe Music".
Although not a player myself, my upbringing has given me a love and
admiration of the music. Bruce Campbell is, however, both a piper
and a teacher of the art, he is also a writer and journalist - a recent
work being ‘The MacCrimmon Pipers of Skye; A Tradition Under Siege’ -
and so he has all the necessary credentials for preparing this book.
There is believed to be an element of self interest in the preparation
of this work for, like any clansman Mr Campbell, would be expected on occasion to play tunes appropriate to his Clan and on one special engagement he nearly got caught out when playing in the presence of Brigadier General Lorne Campbell VC, as he did not at the time know the tune dedicated to the distinguished guest; happily it is included in this collection!
It has been said that Campbells may not have amongst their number the most prize winners in the great competitions but a study of the history of piping reveals that Campbells have made an unrivalled contribution as collectors, teachers and publishers, most notably by the Campbells of Kilberry who inspired the formation of the Piobaireachd Society in 1903.
Bruce Campbell is to be congratulated in continuing this great tradition. His collection wisely includes Argyllshire tunes in addition to those specifically dedicated to Campbells and I have great pleasure in commending it to all with an interest in the music of the Great Highland Bagpipe.

Given that MacGregor pipers have such a dominant role in the history of piping it is surprising that there are so few MacGregor associated tunes.
Undoubtedly the proscription of the name in 1603 and the long-lasting effect that this had will have something to do with it as will the other obvious fact that the Clan Gregor was moved from its original lands around Loch Awe (in the late 1300s/early 1400s) and then, during the period of proscription, were legally landless.
But given that the present territory associated with Clan Gregor is amongst the most beautiful in Scotland there should be many, many more tunes than there are.
Perhaps the fact that it was Piobaireachd, the classical music of piping, which propelled the fame of MacGregor pipers, has much to do with the paucity of examples of Ceol Beag, the so-called 'light music' of the pipes.
Whatever the reason this collection reflects what is available to pipers and represents some of the gems of our repertoire.
The history of the MacGregor pipers is in itself a fascinating one.
They were known as ‘Clann an Mhic Iain Sgeulachie’ or, in its shortened form, ‘Clann an Sgeulachie’.
It meant ‘race of the storyteller’, or historian, and was their cognomen.
That in itself was evidence of their status as a family and although the use of patronymics in the Gaeltachd was widespread it was reserved for chiefly or important families.
The pipers were an offshoot of the MacGregor cadet family of Ruaro in Glenlyon, or more correctly Ruadhshruth - the red-brown stream.
Their piping school at Drumcharry, in Glenyon just a few miles east of the village of Fortingall, was as famous as the men themselves while their record in the early years of the great piping competitions at Falkirk and Edinburgh is outstanding.
It is quite clear that they occupied the role as the leading piping family, certainly as far as playing went, for well over half a century and that dominance continued through a remarkable span of at least nine generations.
Other families and other pipers rose to the top as well but no other family since the Campbells and MacCrimmons occupied such dynastic influence.
It might well be that their influence spread even further than what is imagined because there is evidence that they married into the MacDougall family, equally as famous in piping.
The MacDougalls, like the MacGregors, lived for a time at Fortingall, also in Glen Lyon and members of both families served as pipers to the Campbell Earls of Breadalbane at Taymouth Castle.
Certainly no other family enjoyed as much success on the competitive platform.
The connection with Drumcharry, which could have been established as early as the 1400s, was finally broken in 1885 when Archibald MacGregor moved away.
