THE DAVID GLEN COLLECTION OF ANCIENT PIOBAIREACHD
DAVID GLEN’S ‘A Collection of Ancient Piobaireachd’, despite
the fact that it has been almost totally unavailable since the
1950s, is still one of the most important repositories of the
Piobaireachd tradition. David Glen (1853-1916) was heavily
involved in piping in the second half of the eighteen-hundreds.
The son of Alexander Glen, a prominent Edinburgh-based
bagpipe maker, he took up the family business which had
expanded into publishing and during his own lifetime set a
new benchmark with his own prolific output.

In all he produced five distinct sets of pipe music; David Glen’s
Collection of Highland Bagpipe  Music (a series of 17  books, the first part of which was published in 1876 and the last part in 1900), David Glen’s Highland Bagpipe Tutor (1881), The Music of Clan MacLean (1900), The Edinburgh Collection of Highland Bagpipe Music (a magnificent series of 17 books produced between 1903 and 1908) and, of course, this present work, A Collection of Ancient Piobaireachd, which was produced between 1880 and 1907 and was presented to the public in several different formats including combined books, single volumes, single tunes, and, finally, a composite book of the 100 tunes and settings.

Additionally, he published Historic Notes to this last collection, written by ‘Fionn’, the famed Henry Whyte. David Glen’s venture into Piobaireachd was not the first publishing venture of its kind, far from it. Earlier works had been those of Donald MacDonald (1822), Angus MacKay (1838), William Ross (1869) and Donald MacPhee (1879).

Both Ross and MacPhee enjoyed considerable success with their ventures at a time when published collections of Ceol Beag enjoyed far more popularity, setting the trend which has continued in an ever increasing spiral ever since.

But Glen was an important link in the study of Piobaireachd, being a skilful editor, an assiduous collector and a fine piper who displayed considerable ability as well as an open mind in the task with which he presented himself. He was also assisted by Colin Cameron, son of the great Donald Cameron who was a pupil and friend of Angus MacKay, and had access to all the living authorities of his time as well as the many great unpublished manuscripts.

The decision to re-publish the entire seven book Piobaireachd series comes in the wake of growing interest in the works of David Glen who was reckoned by the legendary John MacDonald, Inverness to be the most reliable authority in existence - and that remark was directly aimed at the works of the Piobaireachd Society and Archibald Campbell.

In many ways David Glen was the logical successor to Angus MacKay but benefited from the aids of improved editing technique, a rationalised method of recording notation and the platform already established by those who had gone before, principally Donald MacDonald and Angus MacKay.
David Glen’s desire to make his works affordable is expressed in his low pricing and that has been maintained in this new series. Costs have been kept low by the use of modern printing methods as well as the decision to reproduce this series from facsimiles of an original set of the second edition which was given to us and which had once been owned by David Ross, Rosehall - the famous cockney piper of the early 1900s. The sizing of the current new series has also been reduced to A4, much in a desire to keep those costs low as well as to present a volume which is more handy in size than the cumbersome larger format of a century or so ago.
The decision to reproduce the texts exactly also will ensure that they are presented in an unaltered form - without any of the silent changes which have so damaged the reputations of the editors of the first fourteen books of the Piobaireachd Society series.
It is hoped that by making this old series available once more that these settings will be heard more and more, in both the competitive and social piping arenas.
