PIPING and the 1745 Jacobite Rising are so intertwined that they are synomous.
Pipes played a crucial part in the first action at High Bridge, they heralded the arrival of the Clan Cameron to what had until then looked like a flop at Prince Charlie's Glenfinnan gathering and then were listed in the Jacobite Orders of the Day for April 16, 1746 - the fateful Battle of Culloden.
Even in the aftermath of the slaughter on the open moors of Drummossie, piping was headline news - although this time not in quite the same way. And in the retreat from Culloden, and the later mopping up operations done by the Argyll Militia, piping had its part to play too.
Although the Rising was now crushed, the story of the PIPERS OF THE FORTY FIVE was not yet over. Jamie Reid, a Piper in Ogilvie's Regiment who was taken prisoner at the fall of Carlisle, was later executed for his part in the affair. At his subsequent trial he argued that he was just a piper and as such did not carry arms. But the government insisted that pipes were an instrument of war and Jamie Reid was finally executed at York.
The '45 was over - but the role played by pipers was significant and has had an everlasting impression on history. Piping historian and writer Bruce Campbell skilfully lays down the story of the part played by both the Jacobite and Hanoverian pipers in this DIGITAL BOOK and in the process unearths some interesting new information - as well as blowing off some of the cobwebs. He also plays a number of pipe tunes which for over two hundred fifty years have been associated with the last Jacobite Rising. They are captured in the special CD ROM.
This then is the story of the Pipers of the Forty Five and their music.
