PIPING FOR HIGHLAND AND COUNTRY DANCING
Piping for Highland dancing is a specialised art which at a Highland Games can place enormous demands on both stamina and musical dexterity.

Over the years I have played both competitively and at functions for dancers representing the Scottish Official Highland Dancing Association (SOHDA), the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (SOBHD),  and the Australian Board of Highland Dancing (ABHDI).

For some years until 2008 I was the principal piper for the Scottish Official Highland Dancing Association, playing at the majority of their events all over Scotland and England including the British Professional Championship, the Scottish Championship, the City of Edinburgh, Scottish National and the Stirling Bridge Championship.

In 2008 I produced the highly-acclaimed double CD ‘The Complete Highland Dancing Archive’ and followed that up with the companion pipe music book, ‘Piping For Highland Dancing’ in 2010.

I have also played extensively for Country dancing both as a regimental piper and for the Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society including a very
memorable 2-week Folk Festival tour of Spain.

As a former Highland dancer (I was taught by Pipe Major Jimmy Mortimer at
Queen Victoria School, Dunblane and later danced as part of my regimental
dancing team) I have a special interest in competitive dancing.

Typical Highland dances include; The Highland Fling, Reel of Tulloch, Strathspey & Highland Reel, Seann Triubhas, Sword Dance (Gillie Caluim), The Flowers of Edinburgh, The Earl of Errol, Jig, Sailor’s Hornpipe, The Village Maid, Flora MacDonald’s Fancy, Scottish Lilt, The Blue Bonnets and Bobbie Cuthbertson. I have worked closely with Miss Jean McKirdy of Edinburgh to study the tempii and steps for nearly 50 dances, many of which are Lesser Known.

These days I also play for the Scottish Highland Dance Company which performs at home and abroad. In late 2011 I will travel to Japan to play with this elite company and regularly accept bookings to perform with the company in either small or large dance combinations - a perfect add-on to any event.

COSTINGS
Because of the specialised nature of Highland dance piping I am pleased to
continue to offer my services outside of the United Kingdom, although travel
costs will be added to any fee. I can also supply anything from one Highland dancer to a fully choreographed show of 36.
