TUNE COMPOSITION BY REQUEST
A number of my own pipe music compositions have been played by pipe bands and solo pipers over the last twenty five years or so and some of them have found their way into print. In recent years I have made a conscious effort to get them published and Volume 1, 2 and 3 of the Duntroon Collection of Highland Pipe Music contains a number of them.
Sometimes a tune might come in a ‘torrent’, the phrasing and rhythmic patterns coming quickly and in a logical sequence. But that is an exception and usually they are the result of a small snatch of melody being developed into a phrase and then gradually worked together to form a tune.
To date I have had more than 60 tunes published or are in works which will be shortly printed and always maintain a ‘pool’ of a dozen or so without names to suit an occasion which comes along. I’d like to say that I get inspired by events but it is usually the other way about - the tune is already there and the occasion inspires the title! An example is THE WINDS OF CHANGE, a 4-parted Jig which had no name until I heard Alex Salmond’s post election speech and that was that.
I have accepted a number of commissions to compose tunes for special occasions and still get the same thrill when I see a person‘s reaction as the first time I ever heard one of my tunes being played by another piper.
If you have an interest in having a tune dedicated for a special occasion, be it a wedding, a farewell or an event I would be happy to discuss it. I try to keep the costing low but want to keep it on a professional basis and for that reason charge £80 for a two-parted tune, including framing, and £100 for a four-parted tune, also including framing.
