MUSIC OF THE MacCRIMMONS
Ceol Beag, Ceol Mor and Canntaireachd
Pipe Major Bruce Campbell
Recorded August 2010
The MacCrimmons were the legendary Skye piping dynasty which flourished for almost three and a half centuries. While they are acknowledged as master pipers, composers and teachers their name is also interwoven with the classical music of piping - Piobaireachd (or Ceol Mor).
Yet the evidence shows that their music is also vibrant as a strand of Gaelic song; but which came first the song or the Piobaireachd?
On this album Bruce Campbell plays examples of Ceol Mor and the light music of the pipes, Ceol Beag, which is taken straight from the Gaelic song repertoire. He also sings two examples of Canntaireachd.
Lament for the Children (Urlar); Tog Orm Mo Phiob (Ceol Beag); The Pretty Dirk (Piobaireachd); The Battle of Waternish (Piobaireachd); The King’s Hand (Ceol Beag); I Gave a Kiss (Canntaireachd and Urlar); The Glen Is Mine (Canntaireachd and Piobaireachd); Lament for Mary MacLeod (Urlar and Variation); MacCrimmon’s Sweetheart (Urlar); The Lament for Donald Duaghal MacKay (Urlar); Lament for MacSwan of Roag (Urlar); Cha Till (Ceol Beag);Cha Till MhicCruimein (Urlar); The MacLeods’ Salute (Piobaireachd)
