From a sodden hilltop in a remote corner of one of the most remote areas in western Europe the MacCrimmon pipers brought the world their enduring legacy, Piobaireachd. The classical music of the Highland bagpipe was most likely developed by this family of musical geniuses who served the MacLeods of Dunvegan for over three hundred years in unbroken succession.
But recent writers have poured cold water on the story of the MacCrimmon pipers, their tradition has come under the siege of modern scepticism. Fuelled by the inadequacies of a succession of so-called scholars who should have known better, many of the inconsistencies of the MacCrimmon legend have been exposed, sometimes brutally.
However, the MacCrimmons did exist and despite the isolation of their location they enriched the musical tapestry of not only their native Gaeldom, but Scotland and the world. Author and historian Bruce Campbell has pulled together every strand of the MacCrimmon story - legends, warts and all - and in presenting the evidence writes a compelling account of the race of warrior pipers who served successive MacLeod chiefs as their hereditary piper.
The legacy of the MacCrimmons is their music, and that will live forever.
"The MacCrimmons of Skye: A Tradition Under Siege" was launched at the world famous MacCrimmon Piping Museum during Skye Week, Thursday 7, 2003.
The book, authored by Bruce Campbell, is the result of exhaustive research into the MacCrimmon piping family and follows their path through five centuries of intrigue and mystery-and not a little intrigue. It is the first major work on the subject in over 20 years and only the third of all time. As such it represents an important milestone in the printed library of piping history. Author Bruce Campbell, a professional historian and journalist as well as a piper of some reputation, was present at the launch to sign copies.

This is a collection of the stories and legends associated with the MacCrimmons.
This has been specially designed to have instant appeal to pipers and non-pipers everywhere.
It is the companion book to Bruce Campbell's August, 2003 UK release, THE MacCRIMMONS OF SKYE: A TRADITION UNDER SIEGE.
While the main book was designed as a scholarly researched book on the famous piping family, the 'Legends' was almost an afterthought - suggested by Spike and Audrey Spencer over a cup of tea at their Borreraig Park Museum.
If it has been designed specifically with the visitor market in mind in should have enough appeal to be of interest to pipers everywhere.
It is a collection of traditional stories and legends from a variety of writers and from publications long out of print.
