“For some the Highland pipe is a serious instrument, to be played with skill and care and to consume a lifetime in its study ... but to me, it’s even more important than that - it is life itself.”

kyle warren: debut album marks passion

AS PIPING WORLD was going to press Kyle Warren released his debut CD 'Wanted' on the KRL label.
Inspired by key events throughout his life, 'Wanted' is a collection of tunes which  includes Kyle's own compositions and arrangements as well as his own take on traditional piping gems.
The album follows closely on the release of his first tune book, ‘Tunez’, which was published in 2010.
At the tender age of 23, Kyle already has a veritable wealth of experience including his stint as pipe major of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland, co-founder of TNT - the world's first piping boyband, BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year finalist and lead piper in world famous bag-rock sensations the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
As well as all of this, Kyle has still managed to find the time to perform and compete as a member of the 6-time world pipe band champions, Field Marshall Montgomery Pipe Band.
“Kyle is following in the footsteps of modern piping trailblazers such as Finlay MacDonald and Chris Armstrong and modernising traditional pipe tunes as well as adding his own special twist,” says his PR company.
“He hopes that his experiences with TNT and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers will help him to tap into a whole new market of piping fans.”
Kyle Warren adds: "I have been playing the pipes since I was eight-years-old and been lucky enough to be involved in some of the most exciting new piping projects around such as the NYPBOS and Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
“I'm really excited about the new CD - it's my chance to play the music I have loved since I was a kid and I'm incredibly passionate about taking pipe music to the masses and changing the perception of piping.
“ 'Wanted' is the culmination of many months of hard work and I'm really pleased with the end result - I can't wait to perform the tracks live".
Kyle is quick, however, to stamp on the suggestion that his idea of ‘perception’ has anything to do with tampering with the tradition.
“No, I don’t feel I am doing that,” he says.
“The tunes are all modern but they are within the traditional pipe scope.
“I have also stuck to a more traditional instrumentation than we would do with the Chillis and I have used fiddle and bodhran with pipes.
“Hopefully, we are adding to what is already out there.”
Currently, Kyle Warren is full time in music, combining playing and teaching.
That is something which he wants to continue although he does have an eye to expanding the remit of the Kyle Warren Band.
“Definitely”, he says.
“I’d like to take the opportunity to do more gigging and take the band on tour when the chance comes.
“It has always been my aspiration to be involved in music in a full time sense, and that is what I want to keep on doing.
“When I got the opportunity to do this album with KRL I was keen not to go down the solo piping route.
“I am not really a solo piper although I did play in a few contests when I was younger.
“I wanted to give what I was doing a band feel and I think I have achieved that.”
Kyle, who is the son of former NYPBOS head Paul and nephew of talented piper/accordionist Andrew, is one of a growing contingent of pipers who travel the world to play at the highest level in a pipe band.
For him, however, it is just a short once a month hop over the Belfast to play with Field Marshall Montgomery with the rest of the month spent doing weekly Thursday practices in Glasgow.
“Field Marshall has a contingent of 15 players (11 pipers) meeting in Glasgow for practices, and it works really well,” he adds.
“There is a lot of travelling although it really doesn’t kick off for us until January with the back-end of the year really just down time.
“There is a lot of work getting up to the standard because it is expected that when we meet up with the band that we are right on the money.
“Although there are 15 players based in Glasgow over half of those are not Scottish with the likes of Ryan Canning, who is Irish, being based here.
“There is a real international flavour to the band and that is pretty exciting too.”
Not just a musical talent, Kyle is also a male model, and is signed with Scotland's popular Model Team Agency as well as making the final 15 in 2008's Mr Scotland competition.
The Kyle Warren band will be performing at this year's Piping Live! Festival and heading out on a Scottish tour after the summer months.
