“For some the Highland pipe is a serious instrument, to be played with skill and care and to consume a lifetime in its study ... but to me, it’s even more important than that - it is life itself.”
Bruce Campbell with acknowledgement to the late, great Bill Shankly

PICTURE PUZZLE: WILLIE GRAY OR GS?
Added 22 February 2012
IN an issue of our sister magazine, PIOBAIREACHD, we ran a photographed which was captioned ‘Willie Gray’ (of the famous ‘Pipe Major Willie Gray’s Farewell to the Glasgow Police’ tune fame).
He was one of the great figures of pre WW2 piping in Scotland and particularly respected as an authority on Piobaireachd. A student of the Cameron School that is probably one of the reasons why his name has slipped in popularity with the present generation. But now there is some doubt that he is actually the subject of the photograph.
Jim McGillivray from Ontario writes: “When I found this photo I immediately thought it was GS, though all these guys had the same little-moustache look.
“Anyway, I ran the photo past a lot of people, including the Argyll & Sutherland and the Gordon Highlanders museum folk.
“There was a lot of disagreement about a lot of things, including the sporran and the badges.
“The kilt pin was almost certainly thought to be the Gordon's, and a couple of other photos of GS showed the same pin in the same high position on the kilts.
“I also consulted Adam Sanderson, an Aberdonian with lots of Gordon connections.
“He saw a number of items, including the kilt pin, that suggested Gordon and he, like me, just thought the first time he saw the photo that it was GS and was surprised when it was identified as Willie Gray.
“I (then) sat known with a ruler, a magnifying glass and the photo, measured the length of the chanter and compared it to the height of the man.
“My calculations determined that this man was no taller than 5'7".
“That was GS's adult height.
“Unfortunately, we don't know Willie Gray's height, but as a Glasgow constable one might expect him to be a larger man.
“Anyway, that's where it stands. I'm by no means 100% sure.
“I don't even think I'm 75% sure. We'll maybe never be sure.”
