Coming soon
This workshop features all aspects of Piobaireachd (including movements, classification, metric phrasing and different styles). These workshop are suitable for pipers from Novice to Intermediate standard.
Instruction will be given by BRUCE CAMPBELL and will also feature a playing demonstration by IAIN SPEIRS.
A full piping recital featuring IAIN SPEIRS will be held in the evening. Edinburgh-based Iain is the third generation of the famous Speirs piping family and as well as winning the Highland Society of London’s Gold Medal he has also won the prestigious Silver Chanter 3 times. He is the current holder of London’s Bratach Gorm for MacCrimmon piobaireachd.
THE WORKSHOP
The day is split into several independent, yet connecting, modules. Instruction is given by Bruce Campbell by way of explanation and then demonstration on a practice chanter and also playing of studio recordings. Discussion completes each module. Each workshop is a 7-hour program with a break for lunch.
During the day demonstration on pipes is also given and, if possible, a session at the end of the day going through ‘Lament for Mary MacLeod’ in concert - for a not-critical audience of fellow students!
Late in the day, Iain Speirs, will give a complete performance of ‘Lament for Mary MacLeod’ and in the evening will also play a full piping recital (this is independent of the workshop although pipers are encouraged to attend).
There is no set ‘standard’ for those who attend this workshop - it is entirely up to you although the more experienced a piper is then the more he/she will gain. But it could also be that this workshop will serve for you as an ‘introduction’ to Piobaireachd.
The method of teaching is to ‘build’ knowledge through a tune - so when the phrases of the Urlar are demonstrated, played and discussed then all aspects will also be desalt with including technique.
The modules will include;
‘An overview of Lament for Mary MacLeod’
‘Construction’
‘Phrasing’
‘Piobaireachd Technique’
‘Styles and Settings’ (this is dependant on the knowledge and level of those taking part)
‘Question and Answer session’
