SGOIL NAM PIOBAIRE - THE PIPING SCHOOL
was started in 1987 to further the art of the Highland bagpipe. It is privately run with no affiliation to any group although it conducts its classes and courses in accordance with the curriculum of the National Piping & Drumming Qualifications Board which allows its students the opportunity of attaining the highest level of certification available and to a universally recognised standard.

It’s aims include;
n provision of classes at all levels
n provision of irregular or ad hoc events and workshops
n furtherance of the art of the Highland Bagpipe at a competitive or non-competitive level including the provision of quality tutorial material by means of print or multi media formats

THE PIPING SCHOOL isn’t some faceless body - instead it is a personal service run by Bruce Campbell who exclusively gives all lessons, both individual and group.

Our popular SKYPE service for PERSONAL LESSONS allows us to reach pipers all over the world and from all levels of standard. In the past few years I have taught beginners, solo competition players - and all standards in between, and from all age groups.

I do not believe you are ever to old to learn to play pipes, and instead work on the principle that older learners bring other valuable characteristics to the table.

Our ongoing range of workshops also sees our unique outreach service extended.

In the past few years I have conducted workshops around the world - including Denmark, Italy, Holland, Australia, Ireland and The Holy Land
as well as England and Scotland.

That is in addition to my Skype pupils which have come from many of those countries plus USA, New Zealand and Russia.

They have included raw beginners up to advanced solo competition pipers and all standards in between - and from all age groups.

Can you learn pipes on your own; can you learn in a pipe band?

These are questions I am often asked and my answer to both of those questions is “no”.

There are certainly a select group of pipe bands around the world who have a specialised tuition program - but they are the rarities of the piping scene.

In the main, pipe bands get on doing the job that they do best - which is performing.

A pipe band’s number one priority is performing; a piping teacher’s number one priority is teaching - my advice is to become a good musician first and then to explore your performing options, be that solo or pipe band.

Likewise, going it on your own.

Maybe 1% of people who want to play pipes have the ability and dedication to plough a lonely path, seeking knowledge and maintaining their own structured learning program - but for the vast majority the sure path is one which has been developed by someone who is qualified to teach.
